What Do You Have to Offer?
This question can resonate deeply with many people: What do I have to offer? What can you do that is beneficial to your work and gives you value over others? How are you an asset? These questions really play a role in determining your worth to a company and will benefit you if you know the answers. If you know how to answer each of these questions in the most honest way, you will have a better chance of getting hired or getting promoted because you can work on your strengths and the things which boost you above the rest.
Realize What You Have to Offer
Obviously, to know how you are a benefit, you must identify what your strengths are. Your strengths and what you have to offer will benefit your company in several ways. You can actually gauge how much of an effect your set of skills has on your work and what the outcome of your work will be. Here is just one example:
Satisfaction - Whether a customer is satisfied because of how well you served them or your employer is happy because of your overall work ethic, your skill set can be satisfactory to others if you know how to use your strengths.
To know how much of an impact you make on your business, take a step back and look at your work. When you are applying your strengths versus when you are just trying to hurry through your work and get it over with, what are the difference? Look at these different categories to know how much of an impact you can truly make:
- Levels of efficiency.
If you can perform a task in a way that is more efficient with either time or cost, you are a benefit.
- Levels of quality.
If you can perform a task in a way that increases its quality in some way.
- Creative thinking.
If you can perform a task in a way that fits the requirements of a business in a more efficient way.
All of these things tie into how much of an impact your work has on your business; the end game demonstrates how your work will change the outcome of your business.
Why Measure How Much of an Impact Your Work Has?
It is important for you to measure the levels of your skill to know how you can continue to grow as both a person and an employee. An employee who is stagnant and never works on themselves is not a benefit to the company as a whole and will grow obsolete as time goes on. However, if you measure how much of a benefit you are to your company, you can:
- Prove to the company how much of an asset you are. When you have proof on paper how your skills are beneficial, the company will look at you with the true value you have and will keep you on and maybe even promote you.
- If you prove that you are an asset, you could potentially receive any extra budgets you need in the future to successfully complete a project. If you are not seen as a high-value employee, you will not be trusted with funding and your projects will be majorly lacking. If you are of value to your business, you will be seen as someone worth investing in.
- If you are valuable, you will always be helping your company to improve. When your company is improving, that means you are at less of a risk of losing your job. Instead, an improving company is a business that will be bringing in more money, which means your paychecks will not be hurting.
Aspects You Should Consider
Whether you have found yourself to be a benefit to your company or learned you need to improve upon your work to increase your value, there are a few things you should keep in mind. These things are good to contemplate and truly take the meaning to heart. If you can say these statements and know for a fact they are true, you are a benefit or are on your way to truly having value in your workplace.
- “I am successful at following through with my plans for development.” If you can continuously follow through with your plans and do not simply quit when the water gets rough, you will truly be someone valuable. Perseverance is important.
- “I personally have created some new options for my work.” Making better ways to tackle projects and tasks is one of the best ways to show you have initiative and motivation.
- “I have done my best to change my mannerisms.” If you were to see two people, side-by-side, and tell them apart in just a 30-second conversation, you’d need to be able to pay attention to their body language and the way they speak. Emulate who you want to become with the way you act and you will become that person.
- “I have done my best to do more good and do less bad.” This ties in with emulating the person you want to become. What would the person you look up to do in a situation? Would they have terrible road rage because someone was a little slow going at a green light or would they take it in stride?
- “I have worked to strengthen my skills and become a better asset.” It is important to always be bettering yourself. If you notice something you could do better, do not ignore it until someone else points it out, actively work on it until you feel you have accomplished what you set out to do.
- “My peers have mentioned my changes.” This is one of the best signals that you have successfully changed the way you’re acting. It typically does take a good amount of time before anyone will comment on changes though, so don’t give up.
- “I have noticed my value has increased.” Be honest with yourself and look at the proof before just going off of how you feel.
